Physical Settings To date MSK has twenty-four facilities throughout New York and New Jersey providing a multitude of inpatient and outpatient services associated with the study, diagnosis and treatment of various forms of cancer. The Memorial hospital accommodates 471 beds, a 72,000-square-foot surgical center and state-of-the-art outpatient treatment center (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 2015c). MSK houses more than 35 core facilities with research being conducted in over 120 laboratories. Core facilities are dedicated to the development of scientific technology that aids in the study and treatment of cancer. Level of Clinical Activity Throughout 2014 nearly 147,000 patients were seen at MSK facilities. Of those more than 22,000 had an inpatient stay and over 593,000 individuals had outpatient visits (Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, 2015c). Clinical activities include patient treatment, clinical trials, research studies and educational training. MSK currently operates one of the world’s largest clinical research programs. During 2012 MSK physicians conducted in excess of 1,100 clinical studies related to both pediatric and adult cancers (para. 14). The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences makes psychological care available to patients and their families as part of MSK’s committee to clinical care; however, the number of patients that partake in these services has not been quantified. In collaboration with affiliated universities, MSK has more than 1,600 residents and clinical fellows and nearly 600 research associates (para. 17).
